Your starting skyranger has a max troop limit of 14 but you only start with 10 troops, be sure to fill it ASAP. Early on you need to make sure you have missiles/ammo in stock for that weapon but later weapons dont need ammoįor your skyranger, click on it and you will see Crew, Equipment and Armour

To equip your craft click on an interceptor and click on the 1 or 2 weapon hardpoints to select a weapon. Most importantly this tab allows you to manage your troops on the skyrangers, equipping and preparing them so you will be using this tab a lot You can also see on this tab how long it takes for them to refuel, rearm and repair damage.

You will also need to upgrade your weapons as you progress. You will need to equip new craft as they dont start with weapons. I also like to look through new recruits and sack ones with low stats in certain areas depending on the stage of the game I'm at, I'll go over this more in war strategies.Įquip Craft is surprisingly complex. I like to name my soldiers according to their capabilities or their role and its very important strategically. The Soldiers tab is useful for naming and vetting soldiers. You also have more tabs to see how much things are costing in maintenance and staff wages and what's taking up most of your storage space.

Initially you will only have one.īase information lays out simply what your base capacities are current usage are such as your max living quarters, how many soldiers/scientists/technicians you have and how full your stores are. Battle begins when you assault a landed or crashed UFO, land at a terror site or the aliens assault your base and you have soldiers on hand to defend it.Ĭlicking on the bases tab will bring up your bases, and you will see your bases with a basic representation of their layout at the top of the opened base tab. On the map mode you manage your bases and UFO interceptions, and build additional bases.

In the course of regular gameplay there are ways to deal with psionic attack - drop your weapons at the end of every turn, or inflict so many casualties on the enemy that their morale collapses, or kill the commanders, or give your soldiers strong armour and weak weapons - but in an early-game terror mission you are perfectly free nay encouraged to take down one enemy then get the heck out of there.Īs for the civilians, it just wasn't their day.The game, like the most recent XCOMs is split into 2 modes: map mode and battle mode. Bear in mind that cyberdiscs explode when they die, so if you're lucky they might cause a chain-reaction. Do you know what I do? I land, plaster the area outside the Skyranger with rockets, try to kill at least one baddy, and then depending on my whim I either take off or try to deploy just for the heck of it. If you land and then immediately take off you get a very small penalty which can be offset by killing a couple of baddies. If you ignore the mission you get a big score penalty. If one of your soldiers is mind-controlled while inside the Skyranger the results are always disastrous. If just one of the baddies sees any of your soldiers, the entire enemy squad knows exactly where you are and will attack your soldiers with mind control. Ordinarily it's good practice to throw out a smoke grenade on turn one, but with terror missions it's quite common for the Skyranger's ramp to directly face a bunch of baddies, so the smoke grenade doesn't help much unless you drop one in the Skyranger itself. You can force a daytime engagement by keeping at least one of your aircraft moving towards the mission dot - as long as it's being targeted by a fighter or the skyranger it won't go away.Īgainst cyberdiscs the most effective early-game weapon is the rocket launcher with large rockets. If it's in the daytime against floaters it's difficult if it's at night against sectoids it's very hard.

The original UFO: Enemy Unknown has a number of difficulty spikes - the first terror mission is a killer.
